Sex sells, unfortunately

You guys won’t believe the kinds of numbers that my blog have been getting just because I posted something about banned websites by the Government and how many included words like “Ghairah-betul” and “asianseks”. I check out the referrals page – you would too if you were getting almost double your usual daily hits! – and suddenly it’s all these Google searches with those words.

If only Nuffnang will give me more money. :P

But I digress. Back to sex, I can’t say I’m terribly surprised. After all, there is the occasional people who come across my site through searches such as “KL and sex” and “Sex in KL”. Mostly foreigners, I must admit but fret not, there weren’t enough searches for us to take over Thailand as a sex destinations (yes, the religious authorities can releks).

Oh, how? Well, I wrote a post a while ago about Sex and the City showing in KL and my blog post title was “Sex in Kuala Lumpur“. How easily people are misled!

At work, there is always this inside joke about how only topics regarding sex and celebrity ever make the Most Viewed story on The Star Online (okay, not everyone jokes about it – but some of us do). I remember a time when a very nice video I did (if I do say so myself) only got a few hundred views on TheStarOnline.tv when another video of models on the catwalk got thousands!

So, is it any surprise than that the current Most Viewed stories on The Star Online are (in reverse order):

3.  Chung avoids bumping into Edison while in KL

Yes, yes, this one has both. Two celebs and a MASSIVE sex scandal which no one bothers about anymore.

2. Ida Nerina has fractured spine, may be paralysed

Ida’s a dear friend, please send her lots of love and positivity. But yes, celeb too.

1. When the other woman turns out to be a man

Jeng jeng jeng! Wah lau, even I wanted to read this story first. Actually, this article is the only reason why I’m writing this blog post – to share with you a story about being on the down low.

And while it may seem funny, unfortunately being on the down low (straight/married men having sex with other men) is a major issue worldwide. I know of a few people (friends of friends, and stories) in Malaysia itself who get married because it is expected of them but who are not attracted to women, and instead to men.

I guess it is sad that the guy was busted that way but short of the embarassment (caused to himself, his partner and the wife), I hope this means that he can live his life the way he wants to.

But once again, back to sex. I don’t know how I feel about the idea that sex sells so much. Don’t get me wrong, I can totally see why this is the case, but I wonder if it’s because we’re all just sex-obsessed or if it’s because everything else is sooooo boring.

Which came first?

Then again, in journalism school, I learned that novelty is one of the elements of journalism. Which that story above, it probably doesn’t get more novel than that in Malaysia.
