Deep Throat and the Watergate scandal

Wow, I do believe this is the longest time I’ve not blogged since I, er, started blogging again. :P Between work, the show, late night parties, raves and oh yeah, sleep, I haven’t had the time. Sorry folks.

I was just reading a small article on Saturday, I think, in The Star about the death of W. Mark Felt aka Deep Throat. I first read about him in 2005 when the former Associate Director of the US FBI revealed himself to be the whistleblower of the Watergate scandal known as Deep Throat.

I’ve heard and read about the term Watergate, but really don’t know much about it, so I thought I’d do a little sleuthing online myself.

1. It was a term for the series of scandals that destroyed former US President Richard Nixon. Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974 due to these scandals.

2. The term Watergate came from the name of the Watergate Hotel in Washiongton D.C. The building was not just a hotel but also houses many offices, including the office of the Democratic National Committee which was burgleds on June 17, 1972.

3. The buglary (and eventual cover up) would lead to an attempt to impeach Nixon. The five men who were arrested for the buglary had links all the way to the White House. It was an indication of a high level political espionage (and sabotage), not to mention a failed attempt at covering up.

4. It was a series of Washington Post articles that linked Nixon to the buglary. The reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, would eventually publish a book All the President’s Men (later turned into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford).

5. It was in this book that Deep Throat was first introduced to the world, as the whistleblower who provided crucial leads to the two reporters.

6. Deep Throat’s identity would remain a secret until he revealed it in 2005 in a Vanity Fair article. This was confirmed by The Washington Post key editor from back then, as well as Woodward.

7. Felt died on Dec 18, 2008. The obituary in The Washington Post was co-written by one Bob Woodward. The reporter would later request that his name be removed from the online edition of the article.
